Determine what is the best roofing material for your area as well as the type of roof your home has. There is no one “best option” that covers every roofing situation. Research is key to picking the best solution for your home or building.

Now that you have determined which materials and the designs you are going to use, the final question to tackle is who is going to do the roofing for you?

As always, be sure to do your homework when trying to find the best roofing company for the job. The lowest price is not always the best way to go. If you make your final decision on based solely on cost alone you may end up disappointed by the results. Cost is only part of the equation, find the best contractor for the job and if the price tag is a little higher know that this is one area of your home that probably justifies the additional expense. Roofs are critical to entire structure, skimping can have major ramifications for the whole house.

Roof repairs - If you have recently had a roofing repair done or a completely new roof put on then be sure to hang on to the left over shingles. Too often homeowners dispose of the extra shingles either by throwing them out, giving them away, or allowing the contractor to keep the left over materials. This is a huge mistake. Shingles are expensive and since you paid for them it is silly to get rid of them, if anything you should return them to the store to get either a refund or store credit for other items. However you really should hang on to a few bundles so that should a wind storm come through and tear off some of the shingles you have some on hand to make immediate repairs. You won’t have to worry about mismatched shingles either since your back ups will have been from the same batch.

The same thing applies to other types of roofing materials such as rolled roofing, and cedar shingles. Matching these up to ones that were bought a few years ago can be quite difficult. Save the remainders from the initial job and just store them in the basement or a garage. A small tip that can save money and hours of frustration down the line.
